Project: HESPER

Nick Dalton
Awarded Amount: $4,843.50

The Four Masted Schooners, “Hesper” and “Luther Little” laid abandoned in Wiscasset’s harbor from the 1930’s until the late 1990’s, where they became icons of the Maine Coast. Project: HESPER commemorates these lost icons in the form of a public sculpture that will be installed on the waterfront in Wiscasset, Maine. The sculpture will take the form of a public drinking fountain, spelling out the word H-E-S-P-E-R.  As the public drinks from the fountain the water travels through each letter and in its journey, the water is brought from the past to the present- activating the history of the waterfront. As they drink, the participants are asked to consider their relationship with what is forever lost, the everchanging waterfront, the town itself, and our shared history as we move inevitably into the future.
